The Windows 11 Update You Can’t Avoid

Microsoft is set to roll out a mandatory update for systems still running older versions of Windows 11, making this a rare case of forced updates from the tech giant. While Microsoft usually gives users control over when to apply updates, it appears the company’s patience has its limits.

Who's Affected?

The company has announced that devices running the 2022 versions of Windows 11, specifically the Home and Pro editions of version 22H2, will be subject to a compulsory "feature update."

What Will You Be Upgraded To?

Interestingly, Microsoft plans to upgrade these users to Windows 11 version 23H2, which was released last year. This decision comes despite the upcoming release of version 24H2, slated for later this fall, which will include a suite of new features. The rationale behind pushing an upgrade to 23H2 now, only to have users face another major update in a few weeks, remains unclear.

Microsoft explained in its advisory, “To help keep you protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 11 Home and Pro devices that are not managed by IT departments when they are nearing the end of servicing.”

For consumer versions of Windows 11, each release comes with a two-year support lifecycle, meaning version 23H2 will be supported until November 2025.

Business Editions Reaching End of Life

Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed that support for certain business editions of Windows 11 released in 2021 is ending. This includes PCs running Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise versions of Windows 11 version 21H2. These systems will no longer receive crucial monthly security updates or previews designed to protect against the latest threats.

Unlike consumer systems, Microsoft does not force updates on business machines. It is up to IT departments to ensure these systems are manually updated to safeguard against emerging vulnerabilities.

When Is Windows 11 Version 24H2 Coming?

As for the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft has yet to set an official release date. While it has been available for testing through the Windows Insider Program, the launch date for the general public remains uncertain. Traditionally, these updates roll out in September or October, but this year has seen a few setbacks.

One such issue involved a new AI feature called "Recall," which was designed to let users retrieve almost anything they had done or read on their computer. However, a serious security flaw was discovered, potentially exposing a plain-text database of captured information to hackers. Microsoft quickly removed Recall from testing, and it will now be introduced later, separate from the 24H2 update. Notably, this AI feature will only be available on Copilot+ devices, which are equipped with a dedicated AI chip.

In the meantime, users should prepare for the mandatory update, ensuring their systems are running the most secure and up-to-date version of Windows 11.
