Just days ago, it was widely believed that Apple wouldn’t unveil an updated version of the AirPods Max at the keynote, which is expected to focus on the iPhone 16 series. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now hinted in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Apple might be revealing new over-ear headphones at the event.

If this turns out to be accurate, it would mark the first refresh of the AirPods Max since their launch almost four years ago—a timeframe that many would agree makes the update long overdue.

In his post, Gurman stated: "I expect Apple to launch new AirPods Max headphones tomorrow with improved noise cancellation, adaptive audio, and a switch to USB-C. They'll be introduced alongside the low-end AirPods 4. This aligns with what I’ve reported for months, although it goes against the recent high stock levels in stores."

Though Gurman’s prediction is consistent with his earlier reports, much of his recent commentary had leaned toward the idea that AirPods Max 2 wouldn’t be part of the keynote. Perhaps new information has surfaced, but either way, the possibility of refreshed, enhanced over-ear headphones is exciting.

New Updates

Typically, when stores maintain strong inventory levels—as seen recently with price drops on the original AirPods Max—a new version seems less likely. Yet, four years is a lengthy gap for Apple to leave a premium product without an update, and a shift to USB-C is all but inevitable, especially since the AirPods Pro have already made that transition. The upcoming AirPods 4 are also expected to debut with USB-C, so it wouldn’t make sense to leave the AirPods Max stuck with the old Lightning connector.

Additionally, improved noise cancellation is a welcome enhancement, though not surprising given the amount of time that’s passed since the first-generation headphones launched.

In summary, while high inventory levels might suggest Gurman’s report is off the mark, many are hoping he’s right. If the second-generation AirPods Max are on the way, we can also anticipate new color options. Based on Apple’s recent color trends, we’re likely to see a continuation of subtle, muted tones. The wait won’t be long—we’ll know soon enough.
